Michael Young BA MMus ARCM
Michael Young studied piano and composition at the Royal College of Music, where he was a double prize winner. He was also a finalist in the National Piano Competition. He has performed regularly as recitalist and concerto soloist in Europe, USA and in South East Asia, giving many first performances and broadcasts of contemporary works, as well as making a special study of the works of Korngold. He is an active chamber music and accompanist, most recently with Georgia Vale (violin). Michael has been active as a piano teacher for almost 50 years and has given masterclasses and lectures on piano pedagogy all over the world. Many of his former students have gone on to international success and careers as performers. Michael was Head of Keyboard at Wells Cathedral School from 1980 to 2000, where he developed a department with an international reputation for excellence. Formerly a professor of piano at the Royal Academy of Music, he has taught the piano at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama for over 20 years and is an examiner, adjudicator and presenter for the ABRSM and for the British & International Federation of Festivals. He has judged several EPTA National Competitions and prestigious conservatoire events such as the Chappell Gold Medal at RCM.
