Cordelia Williams returns to Eastbourne after a busy Summer touring China and South East Asia and performing in Nairobi, Kenya and at London's Purcell's Rooms.  Cordelia won the prestigious Norah Sande Award, held at the Eastbourne College Theatre in July 2011. She feels honoured to be invited by the Friends of the Towner to return to Eastbourne and be the first pianist to perform in a public recital in the new Birley Centre.  Her programme includes the beautiful Bach Partita and some highly poetic and contemplative pieces by Liszt which she has chosen to playin honour of his 200th anniversary.  These remained among Liszt's favourites of his own compositions and he enjoyed playing them with friends long after his retirement. Cordelia describes the Schumann Fantasie as "just generally amazing"!  The Fantasie was inspired by Schumann's  prolonged separation from his beloved Clara. Music became a way of bridging the distance between them and this particularly comes to the surface in the Fantasie.

A former BBC Young Musician of the Year Piano Winner, Cordelia  attended Chetham's School of Music and Clare College, Cambridge (achieving a First in Theology) and has just graduated from  the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, studying with Prof. Joan Havill.   She has given recital and concerto performances throughout Great Britain as well as France, Italy, Thailand and the Gulf States. Performance highlights include a recital at the Wigmore Hall and concerto appearances with Northern Sinfonia and City of London Sinfonia.  Cordelia is a passionate chamber musician, appearing with the Endellion and Fitzwilliam String Quartets and players from the London Mozart Players. She has recently become a Steinway Artist  This season has included recitals at the Royal Festival Hall and London's  Barbican Centre.  The Friends of the Towner and the Trustees of the Norah Sande Award are delighted that Cordelia has been able to include a recital at the Birley Centre in her 2011 schedule, giving the town another chance to hear one of the UK's most talented new generation of pianists.
